Legionella Protection

Legionella bacteria is commonly found in water. The bacteria multiply when temperatures are between 20-45°C and where nutrients are available. The bacteria are dormant below 20°C and do not survive above 60°C.

Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal type of pneumonia, contracted by inhaling airborne water droplets containing viable Legionella bacteria. Such droplets can be created, for example, by: hot and cold water outlets; atomisers; wet air conditioning plant; and  whirlpool or hydrotherapy baths.

In the UK the HSE recommend  that "The primary method used to control the risk from Legionella is water temperature control. Water services should be operated at temperatures that prevent Legionella growth".

Utlising the Raychem HWAT-R self-regulating heating cable and control systems can provide a reliable solution to the management and control of legionella bacteria.

RAYCHEM HWAT-R is a self-regulating heating cable that adjust its power output to compensate for variations in water and ambient temperatures. It replaces supply-pipe heat losses at the point where the heat loss occurs, providing continuous, energy-efficient hot water temperature maintenance and eliminating the need for a recirculation system.

Installation of the HWAT-R system is simple. The heating cable can be cut to length, spliced, tee-branched, and terminated at the job site, reducing installation costs. Fewer plumbing components are needed; recirculation piping, pumps, and balancing valves are all eliminated. The HWAT-R system maintains hot water temperature continuously at every point along the supply pipe. Unlike conventional recirculation systems, they do not require overheating of supply water to allow for cooling. The HWAT-R system reduces the energy requirements of typical hot water systems with reduced heat loss from supply piping, no heat loss from recirculation piping and no pump to run.

The HWAT-ECO electronic controller provides flexible temperature control, energy savings, heat-up cycle function, BMS interface, and predefined programs that can be customized by the user.
